Vietnam tourism – Key economic sector

2018 is a successful year for Vietnam’s tourism industry. With so much potential for development, tourism is a spearhead economic sector of our country, contributing much to economic growth. So what are the solutions to make the tourism industry more and more developed?

First of all, the tourism industry needs to seize the opportunity

We all realize that our country’s landscapes are not inferior to other countries in the same region, but the way to do tourism still has some limitations. To reach a wide range of tourists, we need to have a clearer and more professional promotional strategy, message and image.

According to the statistics of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, if in 1994 our country only welcomed about one million international tourists, by 2010 the number of visitors has increased five times, and in 2019 it has increased more than 10 times with more than 18 million international visitors. 2019 is also the year the tourism industry achieved a record growth with the number of foreign visitors increasing by more than 20% compared to 2018. Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien could not hide his joy and affirmed that welcoming the 10 millionth international guest is an event of special historical significance in the 56-year development journey of Vietnam’s tourism industry. “This will also be a premise for Vietnam’s tourism to strive for the development-oriented goal of turning tourism into a spearhead economic sector, attracting 15 million international visitors, contributing 10% of GDP by 2020.” – Mr. Thien said.

Vietnam has a lot of potential to develop the tourism industry in terms of both natural and cultural conditions. Vietnam’s tourism industry has a very fast growth rate and revenue in 2019 is about 11 billion USD, with the growth rate of international visitors at about 9.5%/year (the fastest rate compared to other countries in the region). In 2019, it directly contributed 6.6% of GDP; In terms of export contribution and foreign currency revenue, in 2019, tourism exports reached a value of US$ 8.50 billion, accounting for about 4.91% of total export value, 65% of total export value of services. service. Therefore, the Government has chosen to develop tourism into a spearhead economic sector, accounting for an increasing proportion in GDP structure and creating a driving force for socio-economic development.

Take advantages of the strength of nature tourism

Vietnam’s tourism products mainly rely on available resources and culture, so to turn Vietnam’s tourism into a spearhead economic sector, it is necessary to promote its potentials and strengths. We need to proactively develop tourism creatively on the basis of development trends of the world (such as tourism to discover, experience, cure, spirituality, conferences, seminars, etc.) that are in line with the potential of our country; need to apply technological advances in tour design, image promotion, management, administration, etc. Along with that, it is necessary to think that tourism development is the right and responsibility of the enterprises, the state, the community and the people. To do so, it is necessary to improve the benefit distribution mechanism and at the same time do well the communication and awareness raising of the people and the social community.

It can be said that, in the context of many other economic sectors and fields, the potential for development is shrinking, or more difficult, the space and potential for our tourism development is still great. The issue of developing tourism into a spearhead economic sector at this time is both appropriate and taking advantage of opportunities and trends in tourism development in general and in accordance with the reality of our country.

Training human resources in the tourism industry

To develop the tourism industry, the human factor working in this field is very important. According to assessment from human resources experts in this field, there are still many limitations, such as not being properly trained, or weak in foreign languages. Currently, there are many institutions that train tour guide industries and industries related to tourism – hotels. In the coming time, there will be many high-quality human resources serving in the field of tourism and hotel.
