Over the past half century, under the glorious banner of the Vietnam’s Communist Party and the great President Ho Chi Minh, the student movement and the Vietnamese Students’ Association have made outstanding contributions and achievements through revolutionary historical periods, becoming the pride of today’s students.
President Ho Chi Minh’s teachings in the letter to all students on the first school day after the 1945 August Revolution “Whether our Vietnam becomes beautiful or not, whether Vietnamese people make it to the hall of glory, to stand side by side with strong and great countries of all the five continents or not, it depends tremendously on your studying” and the guidelines and policies of the Party and State on education and training have encouraged students to emulate study well, train well and volunteer with the community.
During the 1925 – 1945 period, enlightened by Nguyen Ai Quoc, patriotic student organizations were born, such as Pupil Union, Ngo Quyen Team, and the General Student Union, to lead the student movement under the banner of the Party and beloved Uncle Ho. The pride for generations of students is the establishment of the first Party cell, the establishment and consolidation of the Communist Party of Indochina, Communist Party of Annam, Communist League of Indochina, and branches, organizations of the Communist Youth Union, with most of the party and union members are from students, such as Tran Phu, Ngo Gia Tu, Nguyen Duc Canh, Trinh Dinh Cuu, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Ly Tu Trong, etc.
On January 28th 1941, leader Nguyen Ai Quoc secretly returned to Vietnam to join the Party’s Central Committee to lead the Vietnamese revolutionary movement. Under the direct leadership of the Party, the campaign to form the General Student Union operated openly to unite the patriotic and sympathetic student forces with the revolution. Along with the development of the student movement, the movement of high school students from the North to the South also grew stronger and stronger because of the influence of the common struggle led by the Viet Minh Front and the Unions for National Salvation.
The August 1945 General Uprising of our people under the leadership of the Communist Party and the great President Ho Chi Minh won a complete victory. It was a great achievement of a long, arduous, and self-sacrificing struggle, in which the youth, pupils and students made many worthy contributions, with so many heroic and resilient examples inscribed in the nation’s history.
After the August Revolution, pupils and students enthusiastically studied, trained and participated in the resistance war against French colonialism, and carried out 3 urgent tasks: eradicating ignorance, hunger, and foreign invaders proposed by Uncle Ho and the Government.
From 1947 to 1949, in Saigon, Hue, and Hanoi, the Student resistance association and the Student resistance union were established then spread among many schools in all three regions of the North, Central and South; There is a large number of students admitted to the Union and the Party. The activities of resistance students are getting richer and more diverse. With the slogan “Actively resisting, preparing for a total strike back” has energized the student movement. The student’s struggle spread throughout Indochina.
On November 9th 1949, Hue students dropped their classes. Phan Van Giao, the puppet Governor of Central Vietnam, directly terrorized. Students decided to cancel the class to protest.
On November 22nd 1949, together with the fighting in Hue, Saigon students secretly campaigned to celebrate the Cochinchina Uprising and initiated a response to protest against the arrest of Hue schoolgirls as well as demanded to reform educational policy.
Saigon student movement continuously broke out, making demands such as stop terrorism, suppress and persecute students; release the students arrested after fighting Bao Dai puppet; ensure the student’s security and the right to study.
While the fighting atmosphere in Hue and Saigon is active, in Hanoi, students are also angry because the French and puppet government persecute some brothers and sisters after the school break to celebrate the August Revolution. Chu Van An students decided to cancel the class on November 25th 1949, in the classrooms there were slogans on the walls. The whole school resounded with the slogans “students cancel the class”, “set our friends free”, “defeat the henchmen”.
On January 9th 1950, the Youth Union for National Salvation and the Saigon – Cho Lon Student Union mobilized and organized for more than 2,000 students, many teachers and 7,000 Saigon – Cho Lon people protesting to demand for student’s security to study and release those arrested and to reopen schools. Protesters were brutally suppressed. The bloody suppression on January 9th 1950 and the fighting spirit and sacrifice of Mr. Tran Van On aroused in the students and people of Saigon – Cho Lon the hatred of the enemy and the will to fight against the French colonialists and their henchmen.
With that historical event, following the example and recognizing the indomitable fighting spirit of Mr. Tran Van On and students in the early days of the resistance war, the 1st National Congress of the Youth Union in February 1950 in Viet Bac decided to choose the annual January 9th as the Vietnamese Students Day. The 5th National Congress of the Vietnam Students’ Association on November 22nd to 23rd 1993 in Hanoi has also decided to choose January 9th as the traditional day of the Vietnam Students’ Association.
